Darina Allen has been passionate about Farmer’s Markets ever since she first visited San Francisco in 1995. In 1996 she and a small group from Cork Free Choice consumer group launch the first new age farmers on the Coal Quay in Cork. Later she officially opened the Temple Bar Market in Dublin and in June 2000 initiated the Midleton Farmer’s Market.

Since then the movement has gathered momentum and there are now in excess of 130 Farmers Markets throughout Ireland.

These markets create a beacon of hope and a new way forward for farmers and food producers who welcome the opportunity to sell their produce to the growing number of customers who crave real naturally produced local food in season.

The day will commence with a visit to the Midleton Farmers Market where founder Darina Allen will introduce participants to the stallholders and explain the ethos and structure behind this award-winning market. We will return to the Ballymaloe Cookery School with shopping baskets bulging. After lunch participants will learn how to set up a farmers market, draw up a code of practice, comply with regulations, source equipment and create a structure for the successful operation of a market.

Launch of The Inaugural All Ireland Farmers’ Market Competition - Friday 29th February, Enniscorthy

Enniscorthy Town Council and Co. Wexford Irish Farmers’ Association will launch the Inaugural All Ireland Farmers’ Market Competition by Trevor Sargent, TD Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food & John Browne, TD and Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food on Friday 29th February, 2008 at 11 am in The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy.

The competition will take place in Enniscorthy on Saturday 28th June and Sunday 29th June during the weekend of the local Strawberry Festival. Plans are afoot to contact Farmers’ Markets throughout Ireland and invite them to enter the competition. All 32 counties are encouraged to apply as the event promises to be very attractive and worthwhile for markets to participate. It is anticipated that the event will generate huge enthusiasm and bring big crowds to the town for the weekend.

The present Farmers’ Market which takes place in the Abbey Square on Saturday mornings has already proven very successful and it is considered one of the leading markets around.

We place strong emphasis that all products be local and are of high quality to guarantee assurance.

We appeal to everyone to support this new initiative and let’s all work together in displaying and providing the best local products to the customer.
